How to Organize Your Laundry Room for a Simplified, Efficient Routine
An efficient, well organized laundry room can really make the whole house run better. It may not be the room where you want to hang out with your friends, but it’s just as important as the social rooms in your home. Read on and I’ll share just how to make the chore of doing laundry as pleasant as it can possibly be.
Keep Dirty Clothes Neat and Orderly
No one likes a pile of dirty laundry in the middle of the floor. Let’s avoid this by keeping a covered laundry basket or hamper in each bedroom and also in the bathroom. It will be most effective where family members are likely to strip off their clothes. Now, it might take a little bit of training for certain family members to get into the routine of actually picking their clothes up and placing them in a receptacle.
Hampers that double as laundry baskets make it easier to transport dirty clothes to the laundry room and bring clean, folded clothes back to their designated areas. Make a promise to yourself to do laundry at least twice a week so those hampers won’t overflow the dirty clothes back onto the floor.
Add Shelving for Additional Storage
If your laundry room is on the small side like mine is, you could always add shelving above the washer and dryer to house some of your cleaning products and detergents. If style is important to you and gives you extra inspo to do laundry, you could always decant your laundry detergent and other products into some pretty glass jars or containers. Display them in clear view on your newly added shelving— pretty things always make chores worthwhile.
Optimized Vertical Spaces
Vertical space is sometimes overlooked. If you have a small laundry room, you may be lacking horizontal space, so utilizing your vertical space is of the utmost importance. For example, adding a tall cabinet will allow you to store cleaning tools such as a broom or an upright vacuum cleaner.
A stackable washing machine and dryer are also excellent options when trying to optimize your vertical space. Going back to the style (and function, of course) aspect, you may want to leave space on top of the cabinets for a cute set of bins or baskets. If cabinets are not an option for you, maybe you could add hooks to the back of the door for some extra hanging space.
What have we learned? Laundry is a chore— there’s no way around that. We can spruce it up, however, making the process a pleasant experience by simply implementing function, style and good habits. Happy laundering!
