A Pro Organizer's Perspective: Should You Hang or Fold Your Clothes?

Having spent many hours decluttering clients' closets, I have realized that a closet becomes quickly disorganized for a few reasons:

  • One dropped item of clothing is followed by 10 more items, which quickly becomes an overwhelming mountain of everything you own.

  • It’s hard to know what to hang and what to fold.

  • Volume! There is simply too much clothing for the closet space available.

Today, I’m tackling the dilemma of whether you should hang or fold your clothing. Take a look…

1. Helpful Guidelines to Determine Which Clothes to Hang

How do you decide? What do the professionals suggest? My advice is to remember that it boils down to personal preference. However, here are guidelines I recommend when figuring out how to create systems within your closet.

Did you know that hanging your pieces can help to maintain and preserve the item's original shape? Whether that be reducing wrinkles or preserving draping and pleating. For example, I like to hang my trousers, skirts, jackets, and blouses.

In my opinion, you should hang up anything made from a lovely floaty delicate material such as silk and linen.

2. How to Determine Which Clothes to Fold

Folding is an excellent way to save space in your closet. Again, to maintain the integrity of a piece of clothing, I would recommend folding any embroidered or heavily detailed items. Also, fold weightier items like sweaters and knit fabrics because hanging will cause a severe amount of stretching and misshaping.

Jeans are tricky. I like to fold mine as I’m not a fan of jeans hanging over a hanger. There’s nothing worse than jeans with a hanger mark right at the knee cap. You may prefer to hang yours, which is fine if you have the closet space to accommodate it. Ideally, hanging from the belt loop is a better option.

Last but not least, active wear. Folding is preferable. Why? Any synthetic fabric tends to stretch and becomes misshapen when hung on a hanger. Not a good look when it's on your body.

3. Ask for Tips from Your Pro Organizer!

I can’t stress enough, though, that one size certainly does not fit all. Hanging vs. folding depends on the size and layout of your closet.
